  • Description

POPE PAUL WARNED TODAY (FRIDAY) AGAINST RADICAL MISGUIDED CHURCH THINKING WHEN HE OPENED THE FIRST SYNOD OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. HE ALSO MADE A FRESH APPEAL FOR PEACE IN VIETNAM AND OFFERED HIS HELP IN ANY WAY.

THE SYNOD, ATTENDED BY NEARLY 200 CARDINALS AND BISHOPS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENT IN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH SINCE THE ECUMENICAL COUNCIL OF 1962 TO 1965.

THE POPE LOOKED DRAWN AFTER HIS RECENT ILLNESS, AND HIS DOCTORS WERE AMONG THE CONGREGATION AT THE SPECIAL HIGH MASS, CELEBRATED TO MARK THE OPENING OF THE SYNOD. HE WAS ASSISTED BY 14 CARDINALS AND BISHOPS.

HE SAID THE DANGERS FACING THE CHURCH TODAY WERE MORE SERIOUS AND NUMEROUS, AND WERE CAUSED BY THE IRRELIGIOUS ORIENTATION OF THE MODERN MENTALITY.

HE SPOKE OF THE INSIDIOUS DANGERS WITHIN THE CHURCH, CAUSED BY SOME ADAPTING DOGMAS OF FAITH TO SECULAR THOUGHT.

THE SYNOD, A CONSULTATIVE BODY LIKENED TO THE PARLIAMENT OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, IS EXPECTED TO TAKE UP MANY OF THE CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES, PREVIOUSLY CONSIDERED BY THE POPE HIMSELF. THE MEETING OF THE SYNOD WILL LAST A MONTH.
