  • Description

Radio reports from Conakry, the capital of Guinea, say foreign mercenaries landed there early today (Sunday, November 22nd) and there was fighting in the streets.

The reports, monitored in Abidjan, capital of the Ivory Coast, said that President Sekou Toure was safe and unharmed and was directing resistance against the invasion.

Latest reports said hundreds of European mercenaries were fighting against Guinean government troops.

In one broadcast President Toure said the invaders were from Portuguese Guinea. He said foreign ships were still in Guinea's territorial waters near Conakry. He added that numerous mercenaries were in the hands of his force and the battle continued.

President Toure appealed to all sections of the Guinean people and armed forces to rally and crush the invasion.

In the United Nations General Assembly last month Guinea alleged that Portugal was training stateless Africans and white mercenaries with a view to invading the country.
