MR. GEORGE THOMSON, BRITISH MINISTER IN CHARGE OF RHODESIAN AFFAIRS, SAID IN NAIROBI LAST NIGHT?

  • Description

MR. GEORGE THOMSON, BRITISH MINISTER IN CHARGE OF RHODESIAN AFFAIRS, SAID IN NAIROBI LAST NIGHT (MONDAY) THAT BRITAIN WOULD NOT DEVIATE FROM ITS STAND ON THE SIX PRINCIPLES IT HAS LAID DOWN FOR RHODESIAN INDEPENDENCE.

HE TOLD A NEWS CONFERENCE AT NAIROBI AIRPORT THAT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WOULD KEEP ITS PLEDGE OF NIBMAR (NO INDEPENDENCE BEFORE MAJORITY RULE) UNTIL THERE WAS "A SIGNIFICANT GUARANTEED SET OF CIRCUMSTANCES". HE SAID HIS TALKS WITH RHODESIAN LEADER MR. IAN SMITH IN SALISBURY WERE AIMED AT FINDING AN AGREEMENT WHICH WOULD INCLUDE SUCH CIRCUMSTANCES.

MR. THOMSON FLEW IN FROM MALAWI AND UGANDA TO CONTINUE HIS MEETING WITH AFRICAN COMMONWEALTH LEADERS. TODAY (TUESDAY) HE HAD AN HOUR'S TALK WITH PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA AND THEN FLEW ON TO TABORA, TANZANIA TO SEE PRESIDENT JULIUS NYERERE.

THE BRITISH MINISTER TOLD NEWSMEN LAST NIGHT THAT HE HAD PRESENTED BRITAIN'S "FEARLESS" PROPOSALS TO THE DETAINED RHODESIAN AFRICAN NATIONALIST LEADERS JOSHUA NKOMO AND NDABANINGI SITHOLE. HE SAID THE TWO MEN HAD BEEN OUT OF TOUCH WITH DEVELOPMENTS AND HE SAID HE HAD ASKED THEM TO CONSIDER THE PROPOSALS CAREFULLY BEFORE MAKING ANY STATEMENT ON THEM.

MR. THOMSON WAS ACCOMPANIED BY MR. MAURICE FOLEY, MINISTER OF STATE AT THE FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH OFFICE, AND MR. MALCOLM MACDONALD, BRITAIN'S SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE IN AFRICA.
