  • Description

Thousands of people from Ghana's Volta Region gathered at the durbar ground in Ho on Sunday to bring to a climax a week of mourning for Lieutenant-General Kotoka, killed in the abortive military coup in Accra last month. The durbar began with a colourful procession.

Many of those in the procession wore traditional dress, including red head-gear and arm bands. Muskets were fired continuously in the procession. At the durbar ground, the big crowd was entertained with traditional war dances and drumming. The crowd included members of the Volta Regional Committee of Administration, led by its Chairman, Lieutenant Colonel Dedjoe.

A one-minute silence was observed for the late General Kotoka, followed by the pouring of a libation which was drunk by the Chiefs. Colonel Dedjoe and other Committee members then moved among the people to greet them and their Chiefs. In a tribute speech, Colonel Dedjoe described General Kotoka as a hero who laid down his life for Ghana. He said the General would be remembered as a gallant soldier and emancipator.

The President of the Volta Region House of Chiefs, Togbe Adja Tekpor the VI, said the untimely death of General Kotoka had left a vacuum in the national affairs of Ghana. He said the General had led an exemplary life and died gloriously that others might be free. He said General Kotoka would be remembered as long as mankind is strong enough to honour greatness.

More than 1,000 New Cedis was collected for a Kotoka Trust Fund.
