  • Description

The Organisation of African Unity has condemned a number of European nations for breaking the United Nations arms embargo towards South Africa. The Zambian head of state, President Kaunda, and the assistant secretary-general of the O.A.U., Mohamed Sahnoun have criticised France, Britain and Italy for breaking the embargo.

Mr. Sahnoun cited France for selling equipment valued at more than GBP41-million Sterling to South African. West Germany was condemned for selling aircraft and training pilots for South Africa, and Italy was attacked for allowing the manufacture under licence in South Africa of Macchi light jet fighter aircraft. Three hundred of these aircraft have been manufactured in South Africa, according to Mr.Sahnoun, under the supervision of technicians made available by the British Rolls Royce company.

President Kaunda and Mr.Sahnoun are touring a number of European capitals in an effort to dissuade governments from further arms deals with South Africa.

President Kaunda has also been attempting to dissuade governments from supporting the Cabora Bassa dam in Mozambique, and has expressed his gratitude that the Italian government has withdrawn its financial support. President Kaunda described the dam as an aid to entrenching Portuguese colonialism in Mozambique.
