  • Description

An estimated crowd of 100,000 people gathered at an open-air meeting in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, Friday 1 December, to hear a speech by President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. This mass rally was the culmination of a two-day meeting of the ruling Pakistan People's Party.

In his two-hour address, the Pakistani President spoke of the building of a new Pakistan. he mentioned in this context that Bangladesh, among other territories, was asking for recognition by Pakistan.

It was this remark, coming just a year after the conflict between Pakistan and Bangladesh, that generated a violent outburst from some of the people in the crowd. More than 20 shots were fired from handguns as the President remained exposed under floodlights.

This outburst marks one of the more violent demonstrations of discord within Pakistan. In recent weeks three cabinet ministers have handed in their resignations and others have also expressed a desire to leave the Government.
