Background: MILLIONS OF PEOPLE IN BRITAIN AND IN 19 EUROPEAN COUNTRIES WATCHED DIRECT TRANSMISSIONS OR RECORDINGS OF SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL'S STATE FUNERAL IN LONDON TODAY (SATURDAY).SPACE SATELLITES BEAMED THE CEREMONY TO NORTH AMERICA.

THE FUNERAL PROCESSION BEGAN FROM LONDON'S 900-YEAR-OLD WESTMINSTER HALL AT THE PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS BESIDE THE THAMES RIVER WHERE CHURCHILL'S BODY LAY IN STATE FOR THREE DAYS.

AS BIG BEN, THE BELL ON THE HOUSE OF COMMONS CLOCK, BOOMED OUT THE QUARTER HOUR BEFORE TEN, THE FLAG DRAPPED COFFIN WAS CARRIED FROM THE HALL WHERE MORE THAN 300,000 PEOPLE FILED BY IN SILENT TRIBUTE.

FIVE MOUNTED POLICEMEN LED THE LONG PROCESSION, FOLLOWED BY DETACHMENTS OF ALL THE FIGHTING SERVICES.NEAR THE HEAD MARCHED A GROUP OF 13 MIDDLE-AGED MEN IN BRITISH AIR FORCE BLUE - SOME OF THE SURVIVORS OF THE FIGHTER PILOTS WHO STEMMED THE GERMAN AIR INVASION IN THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN IN 1940.

MANY OF THE VAST CROWD WATCHING HAD CAMPED ON THE PAVEMENTS THROUGH A COLD WINTRY NIGHT TO SEE THE STATE'S PROCESSION PASS BY.

THE FEET OF 7,000 TROOPS GLIDED IN SLOW MARCH TO THE BEAT OF FUNERAL MUSIC FROM 16 BANDS.EVERY MINUTE A GUN BOOMED OVER THE CITY - 90 TIMES IN ALL FOR EACH YEAR OF SIR WINSTON'S LIFE.NO COMMONER HAD BEEN SO SALUTED IN DEATH SINCE THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON IN 1852.

THE COFFIN WAS CARRIED OUT BY EIGHT MEN OF THE 2ND BATTALION OF THE GRENADIER GUARDS.ON TOP OF THE COFFIN WAS SIR WINSTON'S ORDER OF THE GARTER, HIS COUNTRY'S HIGHEST ORDER OF CHIVALRY.IT GLEAMED DULL GOLD UNDER THE IRON GREY MORNING SKY.

THE COFFIN WAS DRAWN THROUGH THE LONDON STREETS ON A GUN CARRIAGE TOWED BY MEN OF BRITAIN'S ROYAL NAVY.THE TRADITION OF NAVY MEN PULLING THE CARRIAGE DATES FROM QUEEN VICTORIA'S FUNERAL WHEN SAILORS TOOK OVER THE TRACES OF THE GUN CARRIAGE AFTER THE HORSES AND BOLTED.

AS THE COFFIN PASSED BETWEEN THE CROWDS WOMEN WEPT AND SOME CALLED OUT SOFTLY "GOODBYE, WINNIE."
THE HOUSE OF PARLIAMENT - THE "MOTHER OF PARLIAMENTS" - OVERSHADOWED THIS GREAT LONDON SCENE OF STATE CEREMONIAL.ITS HALLS AND CORRIDORS HAD HEARD CHURCHILL'S VOICE FOR MORE THAN 60 YEARS - HIS UNHEEDED CRIES OF WARNING AGAINST THE GROWING THREAT OF NAZI GERMANY BEFORE 1939, THEN THE BATTLE SPEECHES OF THE WAR YEARS.

THE PROCESSION CRAWLED UP WHITEHALL, THE STREET OF GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS.ALMOST EVERY BUILDING THERE CONTAINED A CHAPTER OF THE DRAMA OF CHURCHILL'S LIFE.

AT THE CENOTAPH, THE NATION'S SHRINE TO THE WAR DEAD, 300 MEMBERS OF THE DANISH WARTIME RESISTANCE MOVEMENT, WHO HAD FLOWN OVER SPECIALLY FOR THE CEREMONY, DIPPED THEIR BANNERS AS THE COFFIN WENT BY.

THE MUFFLED THROB OF THE DRUMS ECHOED BACK FROM THE HOME OFFICE FROM WHERE, AS HOME SECRETARY, HE WENT OUT IN 1910 TO COMMAND POLICE AND TROOPS IN GUN BATTLE WITH A GANG OF ANARCHISTS.

THE COFFIN PASSED THE TREASURY, WHERE HE WAS CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (FINANCE MINISTER).AND THEN BY THE BOARD OF TRADE, WHERE HE WAS MINISTER IN 1908 - THE YEAR HE MARRIED CLEMENTINE HOZIER.

CLOSE BY THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE, WHERE IN A SECRET UNDERGROUND HEADQUARTERS HE CONDUCTED THE STRATEGY OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR.FROM THERE HE BROADCASTS HIS "WE SHALL NEVER SURRENDER" SPEECHES.AT THE TOP OF WHITEHALL THE COFFIN PASSED THE ADMIRALTY WHERE AS FIRST LORD, CHURCHILL LAUNCHED THE ILL-FATED DARDANELLES EXPEDITION AGAINST TURKEY, IN WORLD WAR ONE.

THE CORTEGE TURNED INTO TRAFALGAR SQUARE AND BY THE STATUE OF ANOTHER ENGLISH HERO, ADMIRAL LORD NELSON, THE SEA CONQUEROR OF NAPOLEON.
