    ONE OF THE BIGGEST COLLIERS EVER TO WORK AN AUSTRALIAN PORT REACHED SYDNEY ON HER MAIDEN RECENTLY. ALMOST 580 FEET IN LENGTH, THE "SANGOH MARU" IS OWNED BY COMPANIES AFFILIATED WITH THE MITSUI ORGANISATION, ONE OF JAPAN'S BIGGEST INDUSTRIAL CONCERNS.

    DESIGNED TO OPERATE AT SPEEDS OF ABOUT 14 KNOTS, THE DIESEL-DRIVEN COLLIER HAS A GROSS TONNAGE OF ABOUT 5,500 TONS. SHE CARRIES A CREW OF 38.

    CONSTRUCTION OF THE COLLIER BEGAN IN MARCH THIS YEAR. SHE WAS LAUNCHED 5 1/2 MONTHS LATER. SHE IS NOW ON A 5-YEAR ASSIGNMENT, SHIPPING NEW SOUTH WALES COAL TO JAPAN. THE EIGHT HATCH COVERS ARE BUILT IN SECTIONS. OPERATED BY A STEAM WINCH, EACH SECTION FOLDS BACK NEATLY ON TOP OF THE OTHERS.

    "THE SANGOH MARU" WILL CARRY MORE THAN 23,000 TONS OF COAL ON EACH VOYAGE TO JAPAN. THE BEGINNING OF HER SERVICE WAS PLANNED TO COINCIDE WITH THE COMPLETION OF A NEW BULK COAL LOADING PLANT AT BALMAIN, EXPECTED TO BE FULLY OPERATIONAL BY MARCH NEXT YEAR.
