  • Description

For twelve years, Herr Urban and his son have set out from their home in Vienna every Wednesday for Inzenhofen, near Winer-Neustat. For four days they are away and return home, grimy and exhausted, on the following Sunday evening. Where do they go, what do they do? They work at their hobby, a coal-mine!
Closed down in the nineteen-twenties, after having been worked for over 100 years, the mine gradually deteriorated. In 1937 Urban discovered and decided that he would recommence digging operations. He was sure that there was a rich seam still to be dug. His efforts to get the mine reached fruition in 1946.

This father and son had first to repair fallen pit-props and other essential gear. Waterpumps were installed and a generator was purchased for lighting and power.

So far the mine has yielded nothing more than a few nuggets of coal and many tons of earth and rock but Urban is confirmed in the idea that an unworked seam up to four feet deep awaits discovery. He hopes to reach it sometime next year.

For the other three days of the week, when he isn't in the mine, Urban operates a coal distribution business.
