Despite the loss Argentina moved through to the second round of the World Cup after taking second place in Group Two. Italy who have emerged as the best all-round team in the tournament, have won the World Cup twice previously, but their last success was 40 years ago. The Italian Manager, Enzo Bearzot, described the match with Argentina as his team's fundamental problem had been the absence of Leopoldo Luque, Argentina's injured striker.

Background: Soccer....and Italy underlined the growing power of their challenge for the 1978 World Cup when they beat joint favourites Argentina by one goal to nil on Saturday (10 June) in Buenos Aires. The victory made Italy the only country to win all three first-round matches. This puts them into the second round automatically as winners of the Group One section.

SYNOPSIS: Italy, playing from right to left in the white shorts, had the first opportunity with a header from Bettega, but it was saved by Argentina's goalkeeper, Fillol. But Argentina had the best two chances in the first half. A free kick by Kempes went round the wall to be blocked by Italy's goalkeeper Zoff and just a minute later following a corner, Passarella's header was also saved by Zoff.

In the second half crunching tackles and fouls by both sides marred play. Antonioni with this free kick for Italy narrowly missed the Argentine goal.

From a throw-in Italy developed an attack and Bettega played a one-two with his young striking partner Rossi on the edge of the penalty area, then moved forward to beat the keeper with a lethal low shot to give the Italians the match by one goal to nil.

When time was called the 80,000 local fans broke out with whistles and screams.
