  • Description

The main sanctuary of the Meiji Shrine, Tokyo, destroyed by bombs during the second world war, has been rebuilt and was dedicated on November 3. Thousands of devotees of the Shinto religion congregated in the sanctuary as priests went through the traditional rites.

Dedicated to the grandfather of the present Japanese Emperor -- the founder of modern Japan -- the new sanctuary took two and a half years to rebuild at a cost of about half a million pounds sterling.

Imperial emissaries represented the Emperor at the service.
