Background: The Royal Thai Army has completed its withdrawal of combat troops from South Vietnam. The final stage of the planned withdrawal began on Wednesday (2 February) and was completed on Friday, when the last troops left their headquarters at Bearcat Base near Saigon, and were flown home.
Thai troops went into Vietnam for the first time in 1967, and reached a peak strength of 12,000 two years later. In recent months the Thai contingent has been steadily reduced in parallel with those of other nations involved in the war.
Some 200 Thai officers are to remain in South Vietnam to undertake liaison duties.
