    ON MONDAY, MALAWI CELEBRATED ITS FIRST NATIONAL HOLIDAY SINCE BECOMING A REPUBLIC. THE OCCASION WAS KAMUZU DAY - THE BIRTHDAY OF PRESIDENT DR. H. KAMUZU BANDA. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY'S CELEBRATIONS WAS THE TROOPING OF THE PRESIDENT'S COLOUR BY UNITS OF THE MALAWI ARMY.

    THE TROOPING TOOK PLACE AT ZOMBA AND WAS WATCHED BY A CROWD OF SEVERAL THOUSANDS, INCLUDING MANY FOREIGN DIPLOMATS. THE PRESIDENT'S COLOUR WAS FIRST PRESENTED TO THE MALAWI ARMY AT A CEREMONY LAST YEAR, AND IT CONTAINS BATTLE HONOURS IN RECOGNITION OF SERVICE BY THE FIRST BATTALION, MALAWI RIFLES - FORMERLY KING'S AFRICAN RIFLES IN BOTH WORLD WARS.

    AFTER THE TROOPING, PRESIDENT BANDA WAS HOST AT A RECEPTION AND LUNCH AT STATE HOUSE, THE FORMER COLONIAL GOVERNOR'S RESIDENCE.

    TO MARK KAMUZU DAY, PRESIDENT BANDA RELEASED SOME 1,500 CRIMINAL PRISONERS AND 106 POLITICAL DETAINEES AS AN ACT OF PRESIDENTIAL CLEMENCY.

    CELEBRATIONS OF THE NATIONAL HOLIDAY TOOK PLACE SIMULTANEOUSLY THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
