    Lieutenant-Commander Didier Ratsiraka was invested as Head of State and of the Government of the Malagasy Republic on Sunday (15 June). A few hours later, his Government nationalised all banks, insurance companies and the cinema industry.

    Commander Ratsiraka, 39, was appointed by fellow-members of the Military Directorate which dissolved itself after the new President was appointed.

    His appointment came after a period of turmoil on the island earlier this year, during which the government fell and the then Head of State, Colonel Richard Ratsimandrava, was assassinated.

    The new President is the country's fourth Chief of State since the island became independent of France in 1960.

    President Ratsiraka, a former foreign minister, no faces the job of restoring the island's shaken economy and healing the splits within the army and the country at large.

    Addressing the nation at his investiture, he pledged to deal with these problems and to spread economic development throughout the island.

    SYNOPSIS: The Military Directorate that ruled the Malagasy Republic since the fall of the last government dissolved itself on Sunday. Their action followed the appointment of Lieutenant-Commander Didier Ratsiraka as the island's new Head of State. The Director of the military body General Andriamahazo was among he senior officers at the ceremony on Sunday.

    The new President, who is thirty-nine, was appointed by fellow-members of the military directorate. His installation came after a period of turmoil on the island earlier this year during which the government fell and the then Head of State, Colonel Richard Ratsimandrava, was assassinated. The naval commander is the country's fourth Chief of State since the island became independent of France in nineteen sixty.

    Commander Ratsiraka, a former foreign minister, has pledged to restore the island's shakeh economy and heal splits within the army and the country at large. He also said he would try to spread economic development through-out the island.
