RHODESIAN AND ZAMBIAN TROOPS ARE FACING EACH OTHER ACROSS THE ZAMBEZI RIVER, WHICH IS THE COMMON BORDER BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

  • Description

RHODESIAN AND ZAMBIAN TROOPS ARE FACING EACH OTHER ACROSS THE ZAMBEZI RIVER, WHICH IS THE COMMON BORDER BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. BOTH SIDES ARE REPORTED TO HAVE INCREASED THEIR FRONTIER MILITARY STRENGTH FOLLOWING RHODESIA'S SEIZURE OF INDEPENDENCE.

THE SIGHT-SEEING DELEGATES WERE FROM ZAMBIA, SIERRA LEONE, SOMALIA, KENYA, UGANDA, TANZANIA, THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC, BECHUANALAND, LIBERIA AND NIGERIA. APART FROM THE ROAR OF VICTORIA FALLS, ALL WAS QUIET YESTERDAY.

PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA SAYS AT LEAST TWO BATTALIONS OF WHITE RHODESIAN TROOPS, INCLUDING A DETACHMENT OF THE SPECIAL AIR SERVICE, ARE DEPLOYED ALONG THE BORDER AND REINFORCEMENTS WERE BEING BROUGHT UP.

DESPITE THE MILITARY ACTIVITY, TRADE BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES GOES ON AS NORMAL. TRAINS CROSS THE ZAMBEZI DAILY, TAKING RHODESIAN COAL TO THE ZAMBIAN COPPER MINES, WHICH ARE ALMOST WHOLLY DEPENDENT ON RHODESIAN POWER.

ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BORDER, ZAMBIA IS UNDERSTOOD TO HAVE BROUGHT UP ONE BATTALION AS A "PROTECTIVE MEASURE". PRESIDENT KAUNDA HAS SAID THAT IF ZAMBIA WERE INVADED, "WE WILL NOT HESITATE TO MEET FORCE WITH FORCE". HE HAS ALREADY ANNOUNCED EMERGENCY POWERS TO MEET ANY RHODESIAN ACTION, BUT THE REBEL GOVERNMENT SAYS IT HAS NO QUARREL WITH ZAMBIA.

MEANWHILE, ZAMBIA IS GOING AHEAD WITH BUILDING A WIRE SECURITY FENCE ALONG THE RIVER FRONTIER. AT LIVINGSTONE AIRPORT, NEAR VICTORIA FALLS, A GUARD HAS BEEN PLACED ON AIRCRAFT FROM ZAMBIA'S TINY AIR FORCE. RHODESIA, WHICH HAS A MUCH MORE POWERFUL AIR FORCE, IS MAKING AERIAL PATROLS OF THE BORDER.

AS THE TWO SIDES CONTINUE FACING EACH OTHER, SEVERAL AFRICAN COUNTRIES ARE CALLING FOR FORCE TO CRUSH THE RHODESIAN REBELLION. GUINEA SAYS SHE IS RAISING A MILITARY CONTINGENT FOR THIS PURPOSE, ETHIOPIA HAS PLEDGED HER ARMY TO RESTORE ORDER IF NECESSARY, AND GHANA HAS CALLED FOR A CONFERENCE TO PREPARE PLANS FOR AFRICAN MILITARY ACTION.
