    SHOPS, BANKS AND FACTORIES WERE CLOSED IN CALCUTTA -- AND MOST OTHER PARTS OF WEST BENGAL -- AND TRANSPORT SERVICES WERE BROUGHT TO A HALT AS A 24-HOUR GENERAL STRIKE BEGAN THROUGHOUT THE INDIAN STATE YESTERDAY (THURSDAY). IN AN APPEAL EARLIER, THE STATE GOVERNMENT HAD ASKED THE PEOPLE TO OBSERVE THE STRIKE PEACEFULLY.

    THE STRIKE HAD BEEN CALLED BY THE RULING UNITED FRONT PARTY TO PROTEST AGAINST THE SHOOTING OF FOUR WORKERS BY SECURITY GUARDS AT AN ORDINANCE FACTORY IN COSSIPORE LAST TUESDAY.

    TEEMING STREETS WERE STILLED AND ONLY A FEW PERMITTED VEHICLES WERE ON THE ROADS AS THE FULL EFFECT OF THE STRIKE BEGAN TO BE FELT.

    AIRLINES CANCELLED MANY SERVICES, AND BUSES TRAINS, AND SHIPPING CAME TO A STANDSTILL, LEAVING MANY LONG-DISTANCE TRAVELLERS STRANDED.

    ONE GROUP OF DEMONSTRATORS GATHERED AROUND EFFIGIES OF THE INDIAN PRIME MINISTER, MRS. INDIRA GANDHI, AND THE HOME MINISTER, MR. CHAVAN, DISPLAYING PLACARDS AND CHANTING SLOGANS. THEY THEN SET FIRE TO THE EFFIGIES.
