  • Description

Most of Nicosia, in common with the rest of Greek Cyprus, came to a standstill at 10am, Jan 28, for the one-hour token strike against increased taxes on bread, petrol, car licenses and other items. This was the first organized protest by the recently formed 'Supreme Economic Council' through which the Greek-Cypriots survey the island's economic position.

All shops closed and streets such as notorious Ledra and Onasagorou were deserted. Only the occasional police patrol car indicated that the city was still inhabited.

    All 11 am work recommenced.

Meanwhile, the Turks were observing their second day of mourning for seven of their people killed during riots a year ago.
