    Thousands of people joined in celebrations to mark the 87th birthday of Taiwan's leader, Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek. On Tuesday (October 30), the day before his birthday, a tea party was held at the City Hall in Taipei, to welcome over 10,000 overseas Taiwanese who had returned to their homeland for the birthday festivities.

    On Wednesday, Chiang Kai-Shek's birthday, 30,000 people joined in a hike, sponsored by the Chinese-language newspaper, the Central Daily News. The six-mile (??? kilometre) hike started at the National Palace Museum, and ended at ??? Mountain. The mountain-top celebrations were lad by the published the Central Daily News, Mr. Chu Sung-chiou, and were highlighted by songs and dances.

    Generalissimo Chian Kai-Shok is serving his fifth term as leader of Taiwan, exercising absolute power over the island of fourteen million citizens.

    SYNOPSIS: Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek, the leader of Taiwan, was eighty-seven-years-old on Wednesday. Thousands of people joined in celebrations to mark the anniversary in Taipei, the island's capital. A nine-tier birthday cake was the centre of attraction at one of the many events marking Generalissimo Chiang's anniversary.

    Children and adults added their signatures to birthday books, to send greetings to their leader. On Tuesday, the day before the birthday, thousands of Taiwanese people gathered at a tea party at Taipei's City Hall. Many of the guests had specially returned to Taiwan from overseas for the birthday celebrations.

    A Dragon Dance marked the beginning of a six-mile hike on Wednesday morning. Over thirty-thousand people took part in the early morning walk, leaving the National Palace Museum for the top of Meilun Mountain. The hike was sponsored by a Chinese-language newspaper, the Central Daily News, and each participant received a commemorative badge.

    As well as the greetings from the people of Taiwan, messages from many foreign ambassadors were sent to ??? Generalissimo Chiang. The United States' ambassador, Mr. Walter McConaughty, said the results of Chiang's leadership were "clearly reflected in the continuing progress, prosperity, resilience and stability" of Taiwan. The Philippines ambassador praised Generalissimo Chiang for his dedication "to the struggle for freedom and justice."
    Chiang Kai-Shek is now serving his fifth term of office as the leader of Taiwan.
