    VAST NATURAL GAS RESOURCES WILL SOON BE TAPPED FROM A SUPPLY POINT AT HASSI R'MEL, IN ALGERIA. YESTERDAY (MONDAY), ALGERIAN PRESIDENT HOUARI BOUMEDIENNE VISITED THE SITE OF PIPELINE INSTALLATIONS AT HASSI R'MEL TO INVESTIGATE PROGRESS.

    GAS DRAWN FROM THE SUBTERRANEAN SUPPLY AT HASSI R'MEL WILL FUEL THE WHOLE OF ALGERIA, AND WILL ALSO BE EXPORTED.

    HASSI R'MEL IS A REMOTE OUTPOST IN THE SAHARA DESSERT SOME 280 MILES (450 KMS) FROM ALGIERS. NATURAL GAS DISCOVERIES MADE IN THE AREA WILL MAKE POSSIBLE THE EXPANSION OF EASTERN ALGERIAN INDUSTRY, AND WILL ALSO PROVIDE INDEPENDENT DOMESTIC SUPPLIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

    YESTERDAY A GROUP OF DESERT HORSEMEN PAUSED AT THE GAS WELL CONSTRUCTION SITE. IN TRADITIONAL WHITE ROBES, THE HORSEMEN MADE A COLOURFUL CONTRAST TOT EH GIANT CONCRETE AND METAL PIPES, CRANES AND EARTH-MOVING EQUIPMENT AT WORK AT HASSI R'MEL.
