Background: By collecting the highest aggregate of points over the four distances in the world speed skating championships, the holder Russian Gontsharenko retained his title in Helsinki, today. Another Russian, Shilikovsky, was second and Norwegian Aas, third. Gontsharenko put up easily the best time in the 1500 metres race - 2 mins 17.7 seconds and with high total points for the other qualifying distances - 500, 5,000 and 10,000 metres - amassed a winning aggregate of 193.9 points. Shilkovski got 194.1 points (points are awarded on a penalty basis) and Aas 195.7.
