  • Description

Eighteen soldiers and one civilian died yesterday (Wednesday) following a landslide which hurled huge rocks down on an Israeli army barracks at Neot Hakikar, near the southern Dead Sea. Ten other soldiers were injured.

Shortly after the disaster, Arab guerrillas claimed that the rocks had been deliberately loosened by their men in an attack on the barracks. Later, however, an Israeli officer denied the guerrilla claim, describing it as "pure fantasy" and adding "Every time there is a natural disaster, the terrorists rush in to claim that it is their doing."
The bulk of the damage was on the mass hall while the troops were at their evening meal. Partial communications were also disrupted as telegraph and telephone wires were cut as the boulders crashed down.

The plain wooden box coffins were loaded onto trucks under the supervision of Armed Forces Chief Rabbi Goren, while other soldiers looked on outside the darkness barracks.

The ten wounded were rushed to a military hospital for treatment - some of them suffering from severe injuries. Four others, after emergency treatment, were allowed to go home or back to their quarters, the rest - including one girl soldier - spent the end of the year in hospital.
