    THE WESTERN CEMETERY IN COPENHAGEN TODAY (TUESDAY) TO COMMEMORATE THE VICTIMS OF
    THE MASS TRANSPORTATION FROM LATVIA AND OTHER COUNTRIES TO SIBERIA, AN OPERATION
    WHICH BEGAN ON JUNE 14, 1941.

    WREATHS WERE LAID AT THE LATVIAN MONUMENT IN THE CEMETERY BY MEMBERS OF THE
    LATVIAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE. A GROUP COMPOSED OF FORMER NATIONALS FROM LATVIA,
    ESTONIA AND LITHUANIA ALSO LAID A NUMBER OF PRIVATE WREATHS. MANY OF THOSE
    ATTENDING WORE NATIONAL DRESS FOR THE OCCASION.

    ABOUT 14,000 MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN WERE TRANSPORTED FROM RIGA, THE LATVIAN
    CAPITAL, TO SIBERIA IN THE DEPORTATIONS WHICH BEGAN IN 1941.

    THE DEPORTATIONS STARTED ALMOST EXACTLY A YEAR AFTER THE RUSSIAN ARMY MARCHED
    INTO LATVIA IN 1940. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT A TOTAL OF 105,000 PEOPLE FROM LATVIA
    ALONE WERE TRANSPORTED TO NORTHERN RUSSIA AND SIBERIA.
