    PRESIDENT MAKARIOS FLEW BY HELICOPTER TO THE SOUTH-WEST CYPRUS PORT OF LIMASSOL YESTERDAY (23 DECEMBER) TO INSPECT THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY A TYPHOON WHICH WHIPPED IN FROM THE SEA ON MONDAY AFTERNOON, KILLING TWO AND INJURING 100.

    GOVERNMENT SERVICES, ASSISTED BY BRITISH TROOPS STATIONED ON THE ISLAND, WERE YESTERDAY (23 DECEMBER) WORKING ON CLEARING THE WRECKAGE. TAKING PART WERE ALSO MEN OF THE BRITISH ROYAL ANGLIAN REGIMENT SERVING WITH THE UNITED NATIONS PEACE FORCE IN THE LIMASSOL DISTRICT.

    TURKISH-CYPRIOT NEWSPAPERS REPORTED MORE THAN 100 HOUSES AND SHOPS HAD BEEN WRECKED IN THE TURKISH QUARTER OF THE PORT, AND THE MINARET OF THE COMMUNITY'S MOSQUE HAD BEEN BLOWN DOWN.

    THE REST OF THE PORT WAS ALSO EXTENSIVELY DAMAGED, AND OVERTURNED CARS WERE A COMMON SIGHT.

    PRESIDENT MAKARIOS VISITED THE INJURED VICTIMS OF THE TYPHOON IN LIMASSOL HOSPITAL BEFORE TOURING THE TOWN TO SEE THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE.
