Relations between the United States and the military junta which toppled President Allende's Marxist regime last September have been good. The U.S. government had been given ten hours advance warning of the coup, but did not inform President Allende of the imminence of a coup.
The United States has maintained diplomatic contacts and relations with Chile throughout the coup period and the subsequent four-man military junta, headed by General Pinochet.
