  • Description

In India Prime Minister Morarji Desai's Janata Party is continuing to make heavy gains in State Assembly elections which have been taking place over the past week. In the northern part of the country the Janata has won a majority in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly and is surging ahead in Bihar, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.

SYNOPSIS: Results so far show that most voters in northern India are in no mood to forget the 21 months of emergency rule they endured under the Congress Party. In Delhi Janata Party supporters were jubilant as results showed that it is well on its way towards winning two-thirds of the 2,300 seats at stake, to give it a majority in the electoral college which will choose a new Indian President in August.

But in the state of West bengal the story was different. It has long been a centre for left-wing activists, among whom the Naxalit es are probably the best known. This political climate was reflected in the State Assembly elections on Tuesday (14 June) and as vote counting got underway it soon became clear that the Marxist Communist Party of India was well ahead of its competitors.

West Bengali Marxist leader Mr Jyoti Basu being declared victorious over his three rivals, who all lost their deposits. As election results were being announced in Calcutta late on Tuesday night it became obvious that the Congress Party had been thoroughly routed and the Janata Party was trailing a poor second to the Marxists. Local observers say that Mr Basu will probably become the next Chief Minister of West Bengal.

However with over 100 results pending the Marxists are not yet assured of total victory.
