    DISASTER STRUCK ON FRIDAY ON THE SMALL ISLAND OF IWO JIMA, OFF NAGASAKI IN SOUTHERN JAPAN. AN EXPLOSION IN A COAL MINE KILLED 30 MINERS AND INJURED 15 OTHERS.

    THE PLACE IS NAMED AFTER THE REMOTE PACIFIC ISLAND WHERE U.S. MARINES AND JAPANESE TROOPS FOUGHT FIERCE BATTLE IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR.

    AGAIN THERE WERE SCENES AKIN TO THE HORRORS OF THE BATTLEFIELD AS RESCUE WORKERS HAULED THE DEAD FROM THE MINE AND HURRIED THE CORPSES AWAY ON TRUCKS THE MINERS USE FOR TRANSPORTING COAL TO THE SURFACE.

    RESCUERS BROUGHT THE LAST BODY OUT 16 HOURS AFTER THE EXPLOSION. THE MINERS WERE WORKING AT A DEPTH OF 1800 FEET (600 METRES) IN A SHAFT EXTENDING UNDER THE SEA WHEN GAS SWEPT THROUGH IT. THE EXPLOSION BROUGHT DOWN TONS OF ROCKS AND MUD ENTOMBING THE MEN.

    SOME OF THOSE INJURED STAGGERED THROUGH SEEPING GAS ALONG TWO MILES (THREE KMS) O SHAFT WAYS TO SAFETY. ALTOGETHER 175 MEN WERE BELOW WHEN THE EXPLOSION HAPPENED BUT MOST WERE OUTSIDE THE DANGER AREA.

    THEY JOINED RELATIVES AT THE SIMPLE WOOD COFFINS AID OUT AMONG INCENSE BURNERS FOR THE TRADITIONAL RITES TO THE VICTIMS.
