  • Description

President Jomo Kenyatta on Sunday (June 27) told the biggest rally ever held in Kenya that anyone who tried to undermine the country's popularly elected government would be crushed.

The mass demonstration came only a few days after a former Assistant Minister, Mr. Gideon Mutiso, was jailed for nine and a half years for attempting to overthrow the Government. Earlier this year, 12 men convicted of plotting to overthrow the Government were jailed for periods up to nine and a half years.

In Sunday's demonstration of loyalty to President Kenyatta, representative groups from all over the country, led by Vice-President Daniel Arap Moi, marched about two miles (three Kilometres) through Nairobi to the city's Uhuru--Freedom--Park. Many of the marchers carried paper flags and slogans.
