    MORE THAN 130 HOUSES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED BY FIRE IN MAURITIUS IN THE FEW DAYS SINCE THE INDIAN OCEAN ISLAND GAINED ITS INDEPENDENCE FROM BRITAIN. BECAUSE OF THE VIOLENCE THAT HAS GREETED INDEPENDENCE A DUCK-TO-DAWN CURFEW HAS BEEN IMPOSED IN THE CAPITAL, PORT LOUIS.

    THE VIOLENCE HAS RESULTED FROM CLASHES BETWEEN MOSLEMS AND CREOLES. THE MEN HAVE BEEN KILLED AND MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED PEOPLE ARRESTED.

    A SPOKESMAN FOR THE MAURITIUS GOVERNMENT SAID THE SITUATION ON THE ISLAND IS UNDER CONTROL. SECURITY FORCES ARE MAINTAINING THE CURFEW AND KEEPING ORDER.

    ONE OF THE STRICTEST SECURITY MEASURES WILL BE BROUGHT INTO FORCE IN PORT LOUIS AT THE WEEKEND WHEN A TOTAL CURFEW IS ENFORCE FROM FRIDAY EVENING UNTIL MONDAY MORNING.
