  • Description

The people of the ruined Syrian town of Kuneitra are getting used to living in their own homes again -- but under the constant gaze of Israeli soldiers.

The Kuneitra townsfolk returned last week when the Israelis handed over the town as part of their recent cease-fire agreement with Syria. The Israelis had occupied Kuneitra since the 1967 war.

Kuneitra now lies inside the United Nations buffer zone between the two armies. Peruvian United Nations troops man a checkpoint near the town.

Israeli workmen have built a new road along the outskirts of the town and a defensive wall of earth to keep back tanks where their territory meets the buffer zone. A few armed Israelis are working a new agricultural settlement called Keshet just behind the wall. Most of them had been trying to resettle Kuneitra as an Israeli town before the evacuation.

Kuneitra's Governor, Mr. Nayof Nofal, has called on the people of the world to visit Kuneitra and "see for themselves the crime committed by Zionism against humanity". He said Israeli troops demolished mooquoo, churches, schools and hospitals, before withdrawing on 25 June. The Israelis say the damage was done by Syrian shelling.
