Background: Soccer... and in Naples Italy drew 2-2 with France on Wednesday (8 February) in a friendly international before a crowd of 65,000. It was part of a warm-up series for both teams before they go to the World Cup finals in four months' time...where they've been drawn to meet in the same group.

SYNOPSIS: Italy, on the attack, had the better of the first half. Here, a shot by the Italian defender Romeo Benetti is blocked by French defenders. Winger Claudio Sala picks up the rebound and shoots. But the ball goes high over the French goal.

Italy went ahead after 13 minutes. Marco Tardelli, a midfield player, was brought down in the penalty area by French captain Marius Tresor.

Italian centre forward Francisco Graziani made sure of the penalty, putting his shot to the right of French goalkeeper Andre Rey.

Graziani also got the second, heading in a cross from the wing.

In the second half Italy relaxed, giving France more room, and after five minutes the French scored. From a corner Dominique Bathenay ran unmarked to head home past Italy's keeper Dino Zoff.

France came close to equalising when they were awarded a free kick, taken by forwarded Michel Plantini. But the referee disallowed it because he wasn't ready.

With France still going forward they were awarded another free kick. Platini took it again. The ball hit the wall and was eventually kicked away wildly by Italian defender Benetti.

Ten minutes from the end France equalised. Platini was brought down on the edge of the Italian area. He took the kick himself and this time the goal stood.
