    PRESIDENT YAHYA KHAN OF PAKISTAN ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY (APRIL 24-25) VISITED THE TORNADO - DEVASTATED AREAS AROUND DACCA IN EAST PAKISTAN. THE PRESIDENT'S VISIT TO DACCA WAS PART OF HIS FIRST MAJOR TOUR OF THE COUNTRY SINCE TAKING OFFICE ON MARCH 25.

    AT LEAST ONE THOUSAND PEOPLE ARE FEARED TO HAVE DIED IN THE TORNADOS AND HURRICANE WINDS WHICH ROARED THROUGH THE AREA ON 14 AND 17 APRIL. ANOTHER FOUR THOUSAND WERE REPORTED TO BE INJURED AND 100,000 LEFT HOMELESS BY THE STORMS, DESCRIBED BY RESIDENTS AS THE WORST NATURAL DISASTER TO HIT DACCA IN LIVING MEMORY.

    AFTER TOURING THE DISASTER ZONE, PRESIDENT YAHYA ANNOUNCED FURTHER GRANTS OF FINANCIAL AID VICTIMS OF THE STORMS.

    THE PRESIDENT SAID HE WAS SATISFIED WITH THE RELIEF WORK BEING DONE BY THE ARMY, CIVIL OFFICIALS AND VOLUNTEER ORGANISATIONS.

    THE NEXT PHASE, HE SAID, WOULD BE REHABILITATION. THIS WOULD INCLUDE THE SUPPLY OF BUILDING MATERIALS.

    IN SOME PARTS, VERY LITTLE WAS LEFT STANDING AS THE 90 M.P.H (150 KMS) WINDS WHIPPED THROUGH RESIDENTIAL AREAS.

    PRESIDENT YAHYA ALSO CALLED IN TO THE DACCA COLLEGE HOSPITAL WHERE HE MET VICTIMS OF THE TORNADOS AND DISCUSSED THEIR INJURIES AND TREATMENT WITH DOCTORS. THE PRESIDENT ALSO STOPPED AND CHATTED WITH SEVERAL OF THE INJURED.

    LATEST REPORTS SAY THE SITUATION IN THE AFFECTED PARTS OF THE PROVINCE IS RETURNING TO NORMAL.
