  • Description

The United Nations Ad Hoc Committee on International Terrorism, in the second day of its meeting, on Tuesday (24 July) saw a serious clash between French and Canadian delegates.

The French delegate. M. Mel Museux, said his country would abstain from a vote on Resolution 3034 -- a motion binding member nations to anti-terrorist measures -- in the belief that measures could not be taken "without considering the profound causes" of terrorism.

Replying, Mr. Erik B. Wang, the Canadian delegate, insisted that action had to be taken immediately due to "the threat to innocent persons in different parts of the world and the whole community of nations."
Formation of the committee followed a week of wrangling among the delegates regarding ??? and agenda.

Delegates from Nigeria and Uruguay has previously spoken to condemn terrorism but without declaring their countries' willingness to take action.
