  • Description

An anti-apartheid student plans to wreck next month's South African cricket tour of England with an army of locusts. David Wilton-Godberford, a 20 year old biology student, said at his home in Wales that he already has 50,000 of the voracious insects ready to raze cricket pitches.

He plans to release up to 100,000 locusts on a particular ground when the weather is hot enough for them to perform well. He claims that they will eat every blade of grass and green foliage.

But an entomologist from the London Zoo says the damage caused by the crickets will be trivial. He added that to be really effective the locusts would need a temperature near 90 degrees F. (32C) and it's a rare day in Britain that the mercury reaches that high. The insects could also be killed in moments with ordinary household insecticide.

However many of the spectators may be put off by thousands of large insects crawling around the grounds.

On Tuesday (12 May) it was reported that Mr. Godberford said it was all a hoax and that he was breeding the locusts for experimental purposes.
