  • Description

IN A SPEECH LAST WEEK-END PRESIDENT KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA ???POKE OF RHODESIAN PLANS TO ATTACK HIS COUNTRY. THERE HAVE SINCE BEEN REPORTS OF A BUILD-UP OF TROOPS ON THE ZAMBIAN SIDE OF THE FRONTIER AT LIVINGSTONE, BUT IT APPEARS THAT THERE HAS AS YET BEEN NO COMPARABLE BUILD-UP THE RHODESIAN SIDE OF THE FRONTIER. ZAMBIAN TROOPS ARE ON THE ALERT IN OTHER PARIS OF THE COUNTRY TO GUARD IMPORTANT INSTALLATIONS. A RHODESIAN SPOKESMAN HAS DENIED PRESIDENT KAUNDA'S CLAIM.

ON WEDNESDAY (26 MARCH) PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA ANNOUNCED AT A PRESS CONFERENCE IN LUSAKA THAT ZAMBIAN TROOPS ARE GUARDING KEY POINTS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, AND HE SAID THAT THIS WAS BEING DONE BECAUSE RELIABLE REPORTS FROM RHODESIA MADE HIM FEAR RHODESIAN AIR-ATTACKS ON THEM. THERE WERE NEWSPAPER REPORTS THAT ZAMBIAN TROOPS HAD ALSO BEEN MOVED UP TO THE BORDER NEAR THE VICTOR A FALLS, WHERE THEY WERE TO BE SEEN GUARDING THE BRIDGE OVER THE ZAMBESI RIVER.

ON THE RHODESIAN SIDE OF THE BORDER IT WAS STATED THAT THE ZAMBIANS HAD SET UP A CAMP AT BATTALION STRENGTH AT LIVINGSTONE. PEOPLE LIVING NEAR THE FRONTIER SAID THAT THERE HAD BEEN NO TROOP MOVEMENTS BY THE RHODESIAN ARMY, BUT THE WATCH FOR GUERRILLAS HAD BEEN INTENSIFIED.
