  • Description

SOME 50,000 PEOPLE TOOK PART IN A DEMONSTRATION IN DELHI YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) PROTESTING AGAINST THE RISING COST OF LIVING IN INDIA.

OVER HALF THE DEMONSTRATORS, MANY OF THEM WOMEN AND CHILDREN, HAD COME FROM OTHER STATES IN INDIA TO PARTICIPATE. THE DEMONSTRATION WAS REPORTED TO BE ORGANISED BY THE COUNTRY'S SOCIALIST PARTY.

WHILE MOST PEOPLE WALKED, OLD PEOPLE JOINED THE PROCESSION IN TRUCKS, BUSES, AND BULLOCK CARTS.

THE DEMONSTRATORS FORMED UP AND THEN MARCHED 15 MILES (24 KILOMETRES) THROUGH THE STREETS OF DELHI TO PARLIAMENT HOUSE. POLICE HAD CLOSED THE APPROACHES TO IT , BUT AFTER FIGHTING BETWEEN POLICE AND DEMONSTRATORS, THE DEMONSTRATORS CRASHED THROUGH THE CORDON AND PRESSED AGAINST THE GATES.

POLICE HOWEVER ONCE MORE PUSHED THE DEMONSTRATORS BACK. MANY OF THEM WERE CARRYING BANNERS SAYING: "NEHRU GET OUT," AND "WE DEMAND BREAD, CLOTHING, AND HOUSES". ALL THE SIGNS WERE IN HINDU SINCE THE CHAIRMAN OF THE SOCIALIST PARTY, DR. RAM MANOHAR LOHIA, WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE REPLACED BY HINDU IN INDIA.

WHILE THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT HOUSE, SOME MEN CLIMBED THE STATUE OF LORD IRWIN - A FORMER BRITISH ADMINISTRATOR -- AND BLACKENED HIS FACE WITH CHARCOAL.
