  • Description

Today is the 7th anniversary of the Catholic President Ngo Dinh Diem killed during the coup d'etat in 1963.

This year, the pro-Ngo Dinh Diem group is reportedly going to hold elaborate anniversary service for the late President while a number of ex-generals who had hand in toppling the austere, incorruptible Chief Executive will organise a get-together to commemorate what is commonly termed the November 1 revolution. The government reportedly has been invited to attend both functions.

The pro-Diem group headed by Truong Cong Cuu, former Minister of Education under Diem (Cuu means literally Lamb) is bent on reinstalling the prestige of the Catholic President was killed during the coup d'etat. This plan has been hatched by what a member of the Vietnamese newspapers called the resurgence of the so-called Can Lao party, formed by Ngo Dinh Nhu, advisor to his brother Diem.

Three service will be held in memory of Diem, two of them at the Saigon Cathedral and at the Mac Chi cemetery where Diem and his brother Nhu were buried.

Last year more than three thousand people attended the memorial service at the cemetery; among them there were senators, Low House Representatives and a number of Ministers of the present government.
