Background: The world's first "Tele-Computer Center" was unveiled here today by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation. The center is the heart of industry's first "computer-controlled teletype system."
The unique facility ties together for the first time a computer system and a nationwide teletype network connecting 300 plants, warehouses and sales offices.

Skilled computer specialists keep the electronic brains running 16 hours a day, providing faster service while also reducing company costs.

For example, a teletype message from Atlanta orders a motor. The computer, in seconds, automatically transmits to the warehouse nearest the customer complete instructions.

The computer remembers the days, transactions and re-orders a stock to accurately control inventory. Just as easily , these versatile machines compute payroll checks, sales statistics, income statements, pension records, and relay intra-company teletype messages.

The center still employs more than 250 people, including 50 highly trained computer programmers and technicians.
