Cowboys in the United States are no longer born in the saddle .. or bare?
Cowboys in the United States are no longer born in the saddle .. or bare their teeth on a branding iron. For American men who aspire to fill the ten gallon hat and the high heel boots, there is now a civilised way to go about it .. John Growing's Rodeo School.
The twenty-seven-years-old Growning converted his family ranch in Red Bluff, California into a training school for potential cowboys.
Now, the novice can save himself knocks and bruises, and the risk of more serious injury, by learning the finer techniques of bronc and bull riding on a trampoline or a machine.
Of course, the school does use bucking broncs and cross-bred bulls to "blood" their pupils, but that comes later.
John Growing is fully qualified to teach the arts of a rodeo rider. He's an ex-collegiate champion himself, and still gives demonstration rides each day at the school.
And according to Growing his idea is catching on, even if his pupils are falling off.
