A NEW MOBILE RADAR IS BEING TESTED AT THE MOMENT IN EAST AFRICA IN THE FIGHT AGAINST LOCUSTS.

  • Description

A NEW MOBILE RADAR IS BEING TESTED AT THE MOMENT IN EAST AFRICA IN THE FIGHT AGAINST LOCUSTS. THE RADAR IS ABLE TO FOLLOW SINGLE LOCUSTS AT DISTANCES OF UP TO 2 1/2 MILES (4 KILOMETRES), AND SWARMS UP TO 60 MILES (100 KILOMETRES) AWAY.

THE DESERT LOCUST CONTROL ORGANISATION FOR EAST AFRICA (DLCOEA) TOGETHER WITH THE ANTI-LOCUST RESEARCH CENTRE (ALRC) IN LONDON, ARE EXPERIMENTING WITH THE USE OF A MOBILE RADAR-SET, A MODIFIED VERSION OF THE BRITISH AEI ESCORT TYPE 651 MARINE RADAR UNIT, IN THEIR EFFORTS TO IMPROVE LOCUST-DETECTION. EAST AFRICA HAS SUFFERED SEVERELY FROM LOCUSTS IN RECENT MONTHS, AND THE WORK OF THIS UNIT IN TRACKING LOCUST SWARMS MAY PROVE IF GREAT HELP TO THE AREA.

THE PROJECT IS HEADED BY MR. J. TUNSTALL, AN EXPERIMENTAL OFFICER WITH THE ALRC, WHO HAS POINTED OUT THAT THIS IS AS YET ONLY A RESEARCH PROJECT. BUT SCIENTISTS HAVE HIGH HOPES THAT THE USE OF RADAR WILL MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO DETECT SWARMS, THEIR DENSITY AND THE WAY THEY ARE MOVING FAR MORE QUICKLY THAN BY TRADITIONAL METHODS.

THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT HAS ALLOCATED GBP4500 TO THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT, AND A FURTHER GBP175,000 WAS GIVEN TO THE DLCOEA IN OCTOBER.
