  • Description

WORLD BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPION FIGHTING HARADA OF JAPAN RETAINED HIS TITLE IN TOKYO ON TUESDAY WITH HIS DEFEAT OVER 15 POUNDS OF COLUMBIA'S BERNARD CARABALLO. HARADA SCORED THE ONLY KNOCKDOWN OF THE FIGHT IN THE FIRST ROUND, AND THEN WENT ON TO WIN ON POINTS.

THE JUDGES WERE UNANIMOUS IN AWARDING HARADA THE DECISION, DESPITE THE FACT THAT HE HAD REDUCED FROM 147 (66 KILOS) POUNDS TO THE 118-POUND (53 KILO) BANTAMWEIGHT LIMIT IN THREE MONTHS. THERE WERE FEARS THAT HE WOULD NOT BE IN CONDITION TO MEET THE COLOMBIAN.

CARABALLO WENT DOWN FOR THE MANDATORY EIGHT COUNT EARLY IN THE FIRST ROUND, WHEN HARADA LANDED A SHORT RIGHT TO HIS JAW. FROM THERE THE BOUT SEE-SAWED, BUT USUALLY IN HARADA'S FAVOUR.

IT WAS THE FOURTH TIME HARADA HAD SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDED HIS TITLE, ALTHOUGH THIS MEETING WITH CARABALLO HAS PROBABLY BEEN THE TOUGHEST SO FAR.

CARABALLO, RANKED SECOND TITLE CONTENDER BY THE WORLD BOXING ASSOCIATION, WAS FASTER THAN THE JAPANESE CHAMPION, BUT COULD NOT TAKE UP THE ATTACK EFFECTIVELY AT ANY TIME DURING THE FIGHT.
