    On the eve of debating the East Pakistan crisis in Parliament, Indian leaders paid homage in New Delhi on Saturday to the country's first Prime Minister -- Jawarharlal Nehru.

    President V. V. Giri, Vice-President G.S. Pathak were among those laying flowers at the late President's cremation site to mark his birthday 82 years ago.

    A rose tree was planted by President Giri at the shrine (samadhi) which is surrounded by the lawns of Shanti Vana. Mr. Nehru -- highly popular amongst the Indian people -- died in 1964, refusing to dictate his successor. But his daughter Mrs. Indira Gandhi, now Prime Minister of India bears her father's former mantle at one of their country's most troubled hours.
