    This week the first of 500 Egyptian peasant families moved into the new village of Abbis, near Alexandria, to become landowners under the first phase of the nation's agrarian reform programme.

    The newly-build village has its own mosque, street lighting and water supply for families and cattle.

    Distribution of requisitioned land to small farmers in the UAR was one of the chief pledges of President Nasser when he took office. The agrarian reform programme includes the setting up of veterinary centers, agricultural, education and stabilised prices to improve the national economy.
