  • Description

The Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, told members of the Sikkim Assembly in New Delhi on Tuesday (9 July) that India's policy towards its neighbours was one of firendship. During a 50-minute meeting with the visiting delegation she said India had never tried to put any kind of pressure on them.

The 32 member Sikkim delegation arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday - four days after the Chogyal (ruler) of the Indian protectorate had agreed to a new constitution. He had delayed signing it for two weeks fearing that it would mean the end of Sikkim's separate status.

During her talks, Mrs. Gandhi assured the delegates that Sikkim's individuality was assured. She said her country would offer all the help and sympathy the people of the state needed. She said it was up to the 200-thousand inhabitants of Sikkim to decide what future they wanted.
