Background: After publicly warning public safety committees against encroaching on authority, General de Gaulle privately reminded members of the Oran Committee of Safety here today who was master in Algeria.
General Massu, M. Delbecque and other members of the All-Algeria Commitee, who were also present, heard General de Gaulle say: "You must be models of loyalty and discipline"....." I trust you will be that and nothing else."
Although be made the remarks privately, they were overheard. Observers said the committee men were obviously impressed by his authority and accepted his warning. Earlier the General has receive four of the Committee's motions.
They were 1. All French laws be applied immediately throughout Algeria. 2. The Government base itself on the Commitee of Public Safety. 3. A stop should be put to the party system and to foreign interference. 4. Members of the Commitee should march down the Champs Elysees on June 18th.
It appears that the motions of the Committee men told him what ought to do. General de Gaulle replied: "Not one of you realises that authority must be accepted. You are not going to have a revolution every day. What you must do is to win the public over to national unity, to French reform and to the support of General de Gaulle."
"You must do so in the waymI want, without forcing the pace. Another matter of substantical importance is establishing contact between different communities. The 10 million here must all be French and have no doubts about it. The military authorities must seek control over everything, especially over you. Do not try to force their hand, or even appear to do so.
