THE SEARCH FOR OIL, THE MOST VALUED COMMODITY IN THIS MODERN MACHINE AGE, GOES ON.?

  • Description

THE SEARCH FOR OIL, THE MOST VALUED COMMODITY IN THIS MODERN MACHINE AGE, GOES ON. THIS YEAR THE SEARCH HAS MOVED TO THE SEA BEDS IN THE NORTH SEA. CLOSE TO THE COAST OF HOLLAND ARE TWO RIGS JOINTLY OPERATED BY A DUTCH-AMERICAN CONCERN.

SUPERVISING THE OPERATION FROM THE HAGUE IS MR. G.J. HULSEWE, THE DIRECTOR OF FIELD EXPLORATIONS. HIS IS THE TASK OF ENSURING THAT THE WHOLE DRILLING OPERATION RUNS SMOOTHLY AND IN HIS HANDS RESTS THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE NUMEROUS DECISIONS AND REVISIONS THAT HAVE TO BE CARRIED OUT.

THE MEN ON THE RIGS HAVE TO RELY ON SMALL LAUNCHES TO FERRY THEM TO AND FROM THE MAINLAND. ON AMELAND, WHERE ONE OF THE RIGS IS NOW IN OPERATION, WORK GOES ON DAY AND NIGHT. THE DRILL IS KEPT OPERATING STEADILY AND AT THE END OF EACH SECTION IT IS WITHDRAWN AND THE BIT IS CHANGED. GEOLOGISTS, WHO PLAY AN IMPORTANT PART IN ALL DRILLING OPERATIONS, TAKE SAMPLES OF THE ROCK BROUGHT UP FROM THE DEPTHS ON THE DRILL. THEIR ANALYSIS OF THIS ROCK GIVES THE ENGINEERS SOME IDEA AS TO THE OIL-BEARING POTENTIALITIES OF THE STRATA THROUGH WHICH THEY ARE WORKING.

AS THE DRILLING PROGRESSES A SPECIAL FORM OF MUD IS POURED AROUND THE DRILLING HOLE TO PROTECT IT. THIS IS CHEMICALLY PREPARED, AND THE CHEMICALS, LIKE THE FOODSTUFFS AND THE EVER-IMPORTANT MAIL HAVE TO BE BROUGHT FROM THE MAINLAND IN THE SMALL BOATS.

QUICK TRANSPORT BETWEEN THE OIL RIGS IS SOMETIMES PROVIDED BY HELICOPTERS. IN GOOD WEATHER CONDITIONS THESE VERSATILE MACHINES CAN LAND WITHOUT DIFFICULTY ON THE SPECIALLY CONSTRUCTED LANDING PLATFORMS ON THE RIGS.

MR. CAP IS ANOTHER OF THE RIGS THAT ARE PUTTING DOWN BORES IN THE NORTH SEA CLOSE TO THE DUTCH COAST. THIS RIG IS MEETING WITH SOME DIFFICULTY AS THE SANDY BOTTOM OF THE NORTH SEA IS PROVING MOST UNSTABLE. ONE OF THE MAIN LEGS OF THE DRILLING PLATFORM WAS DAMAGED RECENTLY BY A SHIFT OF SAND ON THE SEA BOTTOM AND IT WAS NECESSARY TO SUSPEND OPERATIONS UNTIL THREE THOUSAND SANDSACKS COULD BE PLACED AROUND THE LEG TO PROTECT IT.

OFF-SHORE DRILLING IS A NEW PROCESS IN EUROPE BUT OFF THE COAST OF THE UNITED STATES, VENEZUELA, AND THE PERSIAN GULF, IT IS NOW WELL ESTABLISHED. A DISCOVERY IN THE OPEN WATERS OF THE GULF OF MEXICO IN 1938 STARTED THE WAVE OF OFF-SHORE DRILLINGS THAT HAS NOW REACHED THE NORTH SEA. MANY LARGE CONCERNS ARE ANNOUNCING PLANS FOR PROSPECTING THE SHALLOW SEA BOTTOM. HOPES WERE RAISED THREE YEARS AGO WHEN A LARGE NATURAL GAS FIELD WAS REVEALED UNDER THE NETHERLANDS, THIS, SOME GEOLOGISTS BELIEVE, MAY SPREAD OUT UNDER THE NORTH SEA AND MAY ALSO INDICATE THE PRESENCE OF OIL DEPOSITS.

MEANWHILE IT IS ANNOUNCED THAT A GERMAN FIRM IS TO BEGIN OFF-SHORE DRILLING THIS WEEK.......
