  • Description

A ROYAL AIR FORCE DOCTOR MADE THE FIRST LIVE EJECTION FROM A JET AIRCRAFT USING A REVOLUTIONARY NEW ROCKET-EJECTION SEAT AT CHALGROVE, OXFORDSHIRE, U.K., MARCH 13. THERE IS LESS RISK OF SPINAL INJURY THAN WITH THE PRESENT CARTRIDGE-POWER SYSTEM, AND PILOTS WILL BE ABLE TO ESCAPE FROM THEIR AIRCRAFT WHEN THEY ARE IN A STEEP DIVE OR EVEN UNDER WATER.

THE MAN WHO DEMONSTRATED THE NEW SYSTEM WAS 36-YEAR-OLD SQUADRON-LEADER PETER HOWARD. FLYING AT 288 MILES AN HOUR, HE TUGGED A HANDLE AND BLASTED OUT OF THE COCKPIT OF A TWIN-JET "METEOR". HE HURTLED UPWARDS FROM THE PLANE, AND THEN CAME THE DULL ECHO OF AN EXPLOSION. HIS COCKPIT SEAT FELL AWAY FROM HIM AS HIS PARACHUTE CANOPY GENTLY BILLOWED OPEN.

FIFTEEN SECONDS LATER, HE LANDED SAFELY. THE NEW ROCKET-EJECTOR, DEVELOPED BY THE MARTIN-BAKER AIRCRAFT COMPANY, GIVES A PILOT MORE TIME TO GET HIS PARACHUTE OPENED BY BOOSTING HIS HEIGHT. THE FIRM'S "STANDARD" EJECTION SEAT HAS ALREADY SAVED 527 LIVES.

UNITED STATES AIR FORCE EXPERTS WATCHED THE TEST.
