  • Description

In Lebanon, a powerful car bomb killed seven people and caused widespread damaged in the predominantly Christian East side of Beirut on Monday (20 August).

SYNOPSIS: No one has claimed responsibility for the blast which eyewitnesses maintain was the biggest explosion in Beirut this year. Seven people were killed outright and many were injured when the blast ripped through a busy street, spraying fragments of metal on passer-by, buildings and parked cars.

A series of bomb attacks in Beirut during the past fortnight and continued Israeli raids on southern Lebanon have caused havoc in the country. But despite this and continued fighting between Moslem and Christian factions, the Lebanese Army has finally succeeded in opening the port of Beirut. The port has been the scene of clashes between Moslems and Christians for years and the district had been turned into a virtual no-man's land.

Up until recently the Lebanese Army has been fighting a losing battle to restore order as it is heavily outnumbered by private militias.
