    BRITAIN, WHO HAVE YET TO BEAT POLAND IN AN INTERNATIONAL TRACK AND FIELD COMPETITION, WAS LEADING BY ONE POINT IN THE MEN'S EVENTS AT THE END OF THE FIRST DAY AFTER THE TWO-DAY MATCH BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES OPENED IN LONDON TONIGHT (FRIDAY). THOUGH THE POLES WON SIX OF THE ELEVEN EVENTS DECIDED THE EVENING THE BRITISH DID BETTER WITH THE MINOR PLACINGS TO GAIN THEIR SLENDER LEAD. IN THE OWNER'S EVENTS THE POLISH GIRLS HAVE THE UPPER HAND AND ARE LEADING BY EIGHT POINTS HAVING WON FOUR OF THE SIX EVENTS.

    THE 100 METRES INVITATION SPRINT PROVED AN EXCITING EVENT. IT WAS WON BY D.H. JONES OF BRITAIN IN A TIME OF 10.7 SECONDS, WITH FELLOW CLUB MEMBER R.JONES SECOND IN 10.8 SECONDS. THE ONLY POLISH ENTRY IN THIS RACE WAS Z. SYKA WHO FINISHED FOURTH BEHIND ANOTHER ENGLISHMAN, A. MEAKIN.

    ROBBIE BRIGHTWELL OF BRITAIN, THE EUROPEAN 400 METRES CHAMPION AND CAPTAIN OF BRITAIN'S OLYMPIC TEAM HAD A HARD RACE IN THE 400 METRES TONIGHT. HIS MAIN OPPONENT WAS THE POLISH RECORD HOLDER ANDRZEJ BADENSKI. A VERY CLOSE FINISH WAS INEVITABLE AND BRIGHTWELL ONLY JUST EDGED HOME IN FRONT OF BADENSKI WITH BOTH MEN RECORDING THE SAME TIME - 46.2 SECONDS.

    THE 4 BY 100 METRES WOMEN'S RELAY WAS WON BY POLAND IN 45.3 SECONDS - ONLY POINT THREE OF A SECOND OUTSIDE THE UNITED KINGDOM ALL COMERS' RECORD. THE POLISH TEAM FOR THIS EVENT WERE M.P ATKOWSKA, I. KIRSZENSTEIN, B. SOBOTTA AND H. GORECKA. THE BRITISH TEAM WERE V. COBB, M. RAND, D. ARDEN AND S. PARKIN. ALSO ONLY POINT THREE OF A SECOND OUTSIDE THE UNITED KINGDOM ALL COMERS' RECORD WAS THE MEN'S 4 BY 100 METRES RELAY. THIS TOO WAS WON BY POLAND IN A TIME OF 40 SECS (THE ALL COMER'S RECORD IS 39.7 SECONDS). THE WINNING TEAM WAS W. MANIAK, M. FOLK, A. ZIELINSHI, AND M. DUDZIAK. THE BRITISH TEAM WERE W. CAMPBELL, L. DAVIES, P. RADFORD AND R. FRITH.

    A CLOSE AND SPECTACULAR FINISH WAS RECORDED IN THE FIVE THOUSAND METRES. HERE THE BRITISH ALL-COMERS' RECORD FELL TO LECH BOGUSZEWICH OF POLAND IN A TIME OF THIRTEEN MINUTES. FIFTY-ONE SECONDS. THIS WAS THE THIRD TIME THIS YEAR THAT THE POLE HAS WON AT THE WHITE CITY TRACK IN LONDON AND THE TIME WAS A PERSONAL TRIUMPH FOR HIM - BETTERING BY THREE POINT EIGHT SECONDS HIS PREVIOUS BEST TIME OVER THE DISTANCE. HERRING AND GRAHAM OF BRITAIN FINISHED SECOND AND THIRD.

    THE MATCH IS CONCLUDED TOMORROW.
