    A JAPANESE ARCHITECT, PROFESSOR KENZO TANGE, WAS TODAY (TUESDAY) AWARDED BRITAIN'S ROYAL GOLD MEDAL FOR ARCHITECTURE. IT IS THE FIRST TIME THE AWARD HAS BEEN MADE TO A JAPANESE ARCHITECT. THE CEREMONY TOOK PLACE AT A MEETING AT THE ROYAL INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS IN LONDON.

    THE ROYAL GOLD MEDAL FOR ARCHITECTURE IS AWARDED EVERY YEAR BY THE QUEEN, UPON THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE ROYAL INSTITUTE OF BRITISH ARCHITECTS. IT IS USUALLY PRESENTED IN CONNECTION WITH THE DESIGN OF A SPECIFIC BUILDING, BUT IN PROFESSOR TANGE'S CASE THE AWARD WAS MADE IN RECOGNITION OF HIS CONTRIBUTION GENERALLY TO THE FIELDS OF ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING.

    THE MEDAL WAS HANDED TO PROFESSOR TANGE BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE ROYAL INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS, SIR DONALD GIBSON.
