  • Description

Along the Mall in London, men from the Ministry of Works have been busy for the last week erecting plaques, bunting and flags to greet President De Gaulle, when he arrives on his four-day State Visit, April,5. Stands have been built to enable Londoners to see the President as he drives to Buckingham Palace.

On the night of his arrival there will be a display of fireworks in St James's Park - first celebration to be held there since 1814, at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. A variety of starshells and Roman candles will transform the Park into a blaze of light. After the display, the President and Madame De Gaulle will drive to Buckingham Palace where they will dine with Queen at a State banquet.

Government buildings along Whitehall will be decorated with flags, including Admiralty Arch and Horse Guards Parade. With the Duke of Edinburgh, President De Gaulle will review Guardsmen on Horse Guards Parade, Apr 7. Troopers of the Household Cavalry, who will provide a Captains Escort for the French visitor, are hard at work rehearsing for the occasion.

President De Gaulle will address members of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the day before he returns to Paris.
